About Indian Premier League

IPL or Indian Premier League is a professional league for conducting cricket competitions in India. The IPL was initiated by BCCI and supervised by Rajeev Shukla, Vice president of BCCI who is the Chairman and Commissioner of the league.
There are 9 teams at present consisting of players from all over the world.

IPL became the first sporting event ever broadcasted live on YouTube in 2010. The brand value of IPL was estimated to be around 3.67 billion dollars during the fourth season. It is estimated that the average salary of a IPL player over one year would be 3.85 million dollars.

The first ( inaigural ) season of IPL started on 18th April, 2008 and lasted for 46 days with 59 matches scheduled. The final match was played in DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Every team played each other both at home and away in a round robin system. The top four ranking sides progressed to the knockout stage of semi-finals followed by a final.. Rajasthan Royals defeated Chennai Super Kings in the finals and emerged as the inaugural IPL Champions.

The second season coincided with General Elections in India in 2009. Taking into consideration of security of players, the venue was shifted to South Africa. The format of the tournament was same as the first season. Deccan Chargers of Hyderabad defeated Royal Challengers of Bangalore and emerged as winners in the finals.

The third season of IPL opened in January,2010 with the auction for players. 66 players were on offer but only 11 players were sold. Four teams qualified for the semi-finals. The first semi final was won by Mumbai Indians who defeated Bangalore Royal Challengers by 35 runs. Chennai Super Kings defeated Hyderabad Deccan Chargers in second semi finals. The final was played between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings emerged as the winner in the final.

Two new teams from Pune and Kochi were added during the fourth season to the IPL. This was announced on 21st March,2010. But the bid around Kochi franchisee turned controversial and resulted in resignation of Minister, Shashi Tharoor from Central Government. Later on Lalit Modi was also removed as Chairman of BCCI. Finally on 5th December,2010 it was confirmed that Kochi will participate in fourth season of IPL. With the addition of Pune and Kochi teams, the number of franchisees increased from 8 to 10. So BCCI considered extending the format of the tournament similar to earlier seasons but this would increase the number of matches from 60 to 94. So the round-robin stage of tournament was replaced by a group stage with two groups of five, limiting the number of matches to 74. But this format was replaced by another one in which each team would play 5 other teams in a two-way round robin format and there would be 2 teams against whom they would play only at home and remaining 2 teams against which they would play only away matches. Thus each team plays 14 matches. Top four teams would qualify for the semi-finals. In October 2010, the Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab had their franchises terminated for breaching ownership rules. The new Kochi franchise was also issued a warning to resolve all their ownership disputes.[13] Two months later both teams were finally allowed to take part in the 2011 edition after a court ruling.

Chennai Super Kings won their second consecutive IPL title after defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 58 runs in the fourth season of IPL. CSK had beaten RCB in the playoffs too while RCB defeated Mumbai Indians to reach the final. This is the first time a franchise has won two IPL titles, had four consecutive semi-final visits, come to the finals three times, and successfully defended their title. The top four teams namely CSK, RCB, KKR and MI have also qualified for the Champions League.

The fifth season tournaments of IPL 2012 would be starting from 4th April, 2012 and end on 27th May,2012. 76 matches will be played during the IPL 2012.
